Family Watchdog Favorite Holiday Recipes

Posted on Wednesday, December 19, 2018
Sometimes old fashioned recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation can be better than finding something on Pinterest (oh, we do that too). Take a peek at a few of our cold weather favorite treats for the Holidays. Tell us what you think and also share with us some of your favorite family recipes below!

OATMEAL BLUEBERRY PANCAKES
(Great for those cold mornings with the kids - plus, most of this can be kept on hand!)
1 cup pancake mix
1 cup quick oats
2 tablespoons brown sugar
3/4 cup milk
2 eggs
2 tablespoons butter (plus extra for topping)
1/2 cup frozen blueberries - drained (or substitute for what other berries you have on hand, a berry mix would be wonderful!)
Preheat griddle or other flat cooking surface and mix all ingredients (kids can help this step), folding in the berries last. Spoon onto griddle. This recipe should yield 8-10 pancakes, depending on who is making them!

HOMEMADE HOT CHOCOLATE
Mix one packet of hot chocolate with one coffee cup of hot water. Add lots of marshmallows and more marshmallows if needed and more chocolate sauce if needed. Maybe some extra sugar?

Well that sounds *almost* like this recipe for homemade Hot Chocolate, just in kids form. All Recipes Homemade Hot Cocoa

TRIPLE CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKE
OMG Chocolate Desserts.com

I made this last year before I hit the whole keto and diabetic diet. It was a huge hit with my family. I love to play around with different cheesecakes and recipes, but by far this one was my favorite. I highly suggest not going cheap with any of the chocolate - Ghiradelli now sells their amazing chocolate in the baking isle. I used everything from their cocoa to their chocolate chips, which made this cheesecake a little pricey, but it was all worth it. And I topped off my ganache with a shaved white chocolate that they offered as well, making mine a FOUR layer chocolate cheesecake!

Sidenote: My brother and I have a cheesecake making passion. Invest in a good springform pan and do a lot of looking around on Pinterest for some great ideas. My kids love a lemonade cheesecake in the summer - where I think it's too tart. And for Thanksgiving I normally combine the traditional pumpkin pie with cheesecake, where my brother attempted a pecan pie cheesecake that looked AMAZING. You would be really surprised on what kind of cheesecakes are out there!

ORANGE GLAZED SPIRAL HAM
Growing up, I remember watching my Aunt make this amazing ham. Of course nothing was measured, so take my measurements with a grain of salt and see what tastes better to you!
*Prepare ham in large crockpot, we often have to cut ours down and fit it in on the sides! And of course, throw away whatever seasoning packet they provide you with!
In a medium saucepan, start out with about 28 ounces of orange juice - I always liked the pulped ones!
Add one small jar of orange marmalade
Add about 1-2 cups brown sugar. I always started with one and added more as needed - you will know when it's perfect!
1/2 cup Dijon mustard
4 Tablespoons or so of lite soy sauce
*I whisk all these together over a little heat and taste frequently until the sweetness is there, then I pour it over my ham and cook on low for about 3-4 hours. This is a family favorite that I have been working on teaching my teen boys!
